This message will test that claim. I also wanted to let people on the list know what's going on. We had some last minute delays in preparing a first drop of the code. We had committed to delivering to MIT by the end of August. It seems increasingly likely we are not going to make that date :-) We are now hoping to deliver it tomorrow. This first drop will be rougher than we had hoped, and increases the chances there will be intermediate updates before the next committed drop in December. The first drop will include source code for a CA, RA, and End-user entity (certificate chain verification). It is built using CDSA (Common Data Security Architecture), an API intended to make it easy to change crypto libraries and certificate storage and retrieval mechanisms independently (among other things). The CDSA implementation will be included, though we are having trouble getting makefiles that will convert the CDSA sources into binaries (we do it in a more elaborate build environment). It also includes a wrapper between CDSA and the Cylink Toolkit crypto package for doing DSS signatures. The Cylink toolkit is free for experimental use under terms I don't understand and is (or will be) posted on the MIT web site. We will be sending the code to Jeff Schiller at MIT, who has said he will post it at www.mit.edu/pfl . I don't know how long this will take. RSA signatures will not be supported in the first drop. While we expect PFL to be exportable, we have not yet applied for export permission and are treating it as export controlled until we get it. It contains no crypto code and no support for data confidentiality. More details will follow in the near future. --Charlie Kaufman (charlie_kaufman@iris.com) From owner-imc-pfl Thu Sep 10 16:39:49 1998 Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by mail.proper.com (8.8.8/8.8.5) id QAA26495 for imc-pfl-bks; Thu, 10 Sep 1998 16:39:49 -0700 (PDT) Received: from 2gn.com (insectivora.unids.com [208.196.212.20]) by mail.proper.com (8.8.8/8.8.5) with ESMTP id QAA26491 for ; Thu, 10 Sep 1998 16:39:47 -0700 (PDT) Received: from rodney (perm16-180.ij.net [209.4.16.180]) by 2gn.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id SAA03413 for ; Thu, 10 Sep 1998 18:41:53 -0400 Message-Id: <199809102241.SAA03413@2gn.com> X-Sender: rodney@module-one.tillerman.nu X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.0.2 Date: Thu, 10 Sep 1998 19:41:36 -0400 To: imc-pfl@imc.org From: Rodney Thayer Subject: Fwd: I-D ACTION:draft-ietf-ipsec-pki-req-00.txt Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-imc-pfl@imc.org Precedence: bulk FYI... >A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories. >This draft is a work item of the IP Security Protocol Working Group of the IETF. > > Title : PKI Requirements for IP Security > Author(s) : R. Apparently we've all been waiting with baited breath to actually see Jonah. I was pretty excited when the http://web.mit.edu/pfl link worked, however I was equally disappointed to see it's an NT only release. I guess I missed this in the press release. So, my question is simply, * Will Jonah be ported to Unix by IBM/Lotus/Iris or are we on our own? * If so, any time frame? * If not, does anyone have an idea how easy it would be to rebuild the build environment to use gnu tools? I'm hoping that since the MKS package is required, the build environment is UNIX friendly. -Matt H. P.S. - Sorry to sound like a whining Unix user, not meaning to demean the accomplishment of getting something out. I hope you're not expecting to make much use of the initial release. This is only an initial snapshot, and is severely limited in what it can do (I've got into the habit of referring to this initial drop as more of a code escape than a code release). We do expect to make a series of codedrops between now and the final release, so useful functionality should start to appear before December, but what's (almost) on the website now is for people who want to take a look at the sources, as opposed to actually using the code. If you could let me know any particular problems you ran into, we'll try to fix them in a future drop. Speaking of future drops, we're planning to release an update in the very near future that should provide sources for the CDSA framework and the adapter code for the Cylink CSP. This will simplify the build process considerably. I hope to get some documentation of the architecture and the management API into this update too. The INIfile documentation is what you get by following the "Configuration Documentation" link from the Jonah distribution page. We'll be updating this document, probably with each drop. In fact we know that Jonah won't build using MKS V5.n - you need version 6. Mike's right in that each make is different, and this is likely to mean that you can't just replace the MKS toolkit with some other set of Unix-like tools. However, everything that's specific to a given flavor of make is isolated in two files (rules.mk and src\startup.mk), so it should be possible to use a different one by suitably modifying one or both of these files. If you do try this, let us know what you had to change to get it to work! It's not clear, to me, what to put in the ini files so that the > individual components know where the other servers are. The really important ini file (for server communications) is the one for the RA (jonahra.ini). When the RA creates the pre-registration record it tells the End Entity how to talk to it. The pre-registration record delivery is an out-of-band process. If you look at the jonahra.ini that is included in src/sampleini, in the General section there is a Issuer1URL1 which tells the RA how to talk to the CA (for now, we only support one CA per RA, and each CA only has one way to talk to it) The RA ini file should also have defined in the General section a definition for the NetworkName of the machine that the RA is running on. If one is not specified it defaults to "localhost". If you want the CA or RA to run the service on a port other then 829 you need to specify the TCPPort in the Transport section of the ini file. If you change this value on the CA you need to update the Issuer1URL1 setting on the RA. The INI files that got shipped work if all three servers are running on the same machine. > Additionally my CA > initialization wizard refuses to proceed beyond the panel requesting the > "Administrator Name". The "Next" button is grayed out and nothing I've > tried has been able to convince the "Next" button to activate. Those screens are not active yet, they are still in the prototype stage at this point, you can ignore them. All initialization is done by hand through the steps outlined in the build document. Hope this helps! Make sure you picked up the right include files. The instructions specify exactly which version link to follow off the RSA pages to pick up the right set of include files. If you follow the highest link in the page, as opposed to the version specified, you get errors something like this (one of our testers did that, which I told him at the time would be useful because it's an obvious error to make!). Before I get into my current problem I'd like to thank Fred R. Buck for his initial response to my offline "getting started" note. I'd also like to share a tid bit I found out visa vie the NET USE command. Background: I had problems executing pseudosb due to a failure I'd get attempting to map the X: and Y: drives to the jonah shared folder. I am working on a standalone machine, mostly from my home office. when I manually issued NET USE Y: \\ jonaserv\jonah or any other variant I'd ge t a wierd system error 67. it either could not find my network name or would give me a path error. I sought local support help at IBM poughkeepsie, and as it turns out I had to be lan attached(at the "office" office) to get these commands to work. A message like Net Bios not operational might have been a better clue. Anyway, support folks helped me define a netbios over tcp option in my IBM dialer so I could get this mapping to work from my remote dial-in standalone machine. Which begs the question: will we ever get a build that does not need a network hop to find my local jonah directory? My current error: I build as far as the make of PKCSMAIN.C. I encoutered the following errors: ** hand retyped, (not pasted) with shortcuts: pkcsmain.c<85> : C2065: 'CKR_CRYPTOI_NOT_INITIALIZED' : undeclared identifier <226> : error C2039> : 'C_WaitForSlotEvent' : is not a member of 'CK_FUNCTION_LIST' /src/include\pkcs11.h<89> : see declaraton of 'CK_FUNCTION_LIST' <296> : error C2373: 'C_WaitForSlotEvent' : redefinition;different type modifiers <309> : error C2065: 'CKF_DONT_BLOCK' : undeclared identifier <310> : error C2065: 'CKR_NO_EVENT' : undeclared identifier make: error code 2 make: error code 255 make error code 255 go to EOF I figure I'm missing some include files. Identification of the same would be appreciated. Do you know if any other organization is planning to do so? thanks. ------------- attachment alluded to the above ------------ We have announced that we will also be making a port to Solaris available. We've been talking about December but, realisitically, it's the last thing on our current schedule, and we're resource constrained, so I wouldn't be surprised if that slipped. John's comment succinctly captures the reason why people are looking for a pure Java implementation: so they won't have to wait for a port to their operating system. Also so they won't have to compile the code if they don't want to. ejp From owner-imc-pfl Thu Nov 12 15:37:58 1998 Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by mail.proper.com (8.8.8/8.8.5) id PAA17525 for imc-pfl-bks; Thu, 12 Nov 1998 15:37:58 -0800 (PST) Received: from node21.frontiernet.net (root@node21.frontiernet.net [209.130.129.196]) by mail.proper.com (8.8.8/8.8.5) with ESMTP id PAA17520 for ; Thu, 12 Nov 1998 15:37:56 -0800 (PST) Received: from jonaserv (cs2501-14-16.hgl.ny.frontiernet.net [209.130.142.239]) by node21.frontiernet.net (8.8.8a/8.8.8) with SMTP id SAA237708 for ; Thu, 12 Nov 1998 18:41:09 -0500 Message-ID: <000d01be0e96$318007b0$ef8e82d1@jonaserv.pok.ibm.com> From: "John Wiley" To: Subject: More Build Errors: after 2.01 RSA includes: PKCSMAIN.C Date: Thu, 12 Nov 1998 18:43:02 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_000A_01BE0E6C.47554520" X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.3110.5 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.3110.3 Sender: owner-imc-pfl@imc.org Precedence: bulk This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_000A_01BE0E6C.47554520 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Mary was right about carefully selecting the 2.01 version of the RSA = includes. If that doesn't work, you may have somehow corrupted your source tree, and you should restore it from the .ZIP file. Even when you fix this problem, however, you'll run into problems further on if you're using VC6.0. The build instructions say to use VC5, and we know that the current sources don't build using VC6. We're hoping to release a new snapshot soon that will include a workaround for the VC6 problem, but to build the initial snapshot you must use V5. I resolved the earlier errors and found a strange and wonderful new one... charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Sender: owner-imc-pfl@imc.org Precedence: bulk The second snapshot of the Jonah code is available on the web-site. The most important changes in this snapshot are improvements to the build process (no more copying of system .LIB files, Visual C V6 supported, you can use the Sun JDK instead of Borland JBuilder if you want), and that everything now builds from sources (no more pre-built DLLs). There's a lot of underlying infrastructure that's been added to support CRLs, but that functionality isn't yet exposed at the GUI level. Several (if not all) of the CRMF structures use EXPLICIT tagging (asn_explicit). The CRMF spec (draft-ietf-pkix-crmf-01.txt, April 1998) specifies a default of IMPLICIT tagging. Why is EXPLICIT tagging being used? If the default is IMPLICIT tagging, EXPLICIT tagging should only be used where the EXPLICIT label is used, or where a CHOICE or ANY is being tagged (X.208 26.7c ).
