Re: HTML tags in org, name, etc

<P>My Two Cents...
<P>I have gotten into this argument before, and I really believe that
ANY information interchange format should be able to use document and
text control. In other words, if people are going to use vCard, then
programs using vCards should be able to parse HTML information OUT when
it is not needed (such as a mailing list, database view, etc), but it
should be USED when viewing the card. If all business cards look the
same, then what makes you pick one over the other.
<P>If displaying an image in a certian view does not make sense, link an
icon to it. If the text formatting should not be somewhere, don't use
it. When displaying on a device that does not support text formatting
or images, such as a pager or other small PDA, then strip it out. But
when on a system that does support it, it should be used.
<P>And yes, this message is FULL of HTML tags. HTML is the standard
form of multimedia on the internet. It is as close to standard as
almost anything gets. If something can not support it, then I do not
consider it fully compliant with established standards. RFC822 doesn't
really provide a way to format text. It doesn't really define that HTML
can't be coded into it, or even JavaScript or TCL. Why should
multimedia be confined to one area of the internet? There are web
browsers for almost every platform available, and almost all modern
platforms support graphics, text formatting, and the like. Clinging to
old traditions keeps technology down.
<P>Sorry for the rant... Like I said, my two cents.

Indeed. I have written a vCard and vCalendar parser for the Newton
MessagePad. The practice of putting HTML tags in texts that are not
meant to be viewed in a HTML context is indeed objectionable. I am not
sure what to do with these img tags. I feel "justified" in just letting
them parse through unchanged, but am then putting the burden on my
unexpecting users, who see strange incantations pooping up in their PIM.
But stripping them all out is unfeasible as well. MAybe vCard writers
should advise against it.

Can I tell you that it is amusing to see somebody from Netscape be
concerend with this practice because a vCard from David M. Andrews from
Netscape alerted us to the problem :-). And I see you using html tags in
a rfc822 context too. ;-).
But seriously, we have thought here about this matter as well and we
thought that maybe a value=url parameter could help a parser to decide
to strip out tags or not. Any comments on that direction?
