Strange, I've been thinking the opposite, that the possible presence of a NICKNAME supports the notion that FN might be derived from some type other than N. I guess an example of someone who might want their FN to be based on their NICKNAME would be Lenin.


2) A previous posting by Ronald Alden suggested that it may not be possible to map the structured
   type N to the FN type, and I would like to know if he could provide an example. It is clear
   that the FN type would need to be locale specific (Chinese vs English, for example), but I
   can't think of a case where no mapping exists.

Even with "English" names, the mapping will vary from person to person (no way would I ever use FN: Philip A Barker).
