Learning about why it's growing in popularity while e-mail is challenged would be a good exercise in understanding user needs as we move forward in email-ng... It's obviously doing something right that e-mail can learn from.... 


Most (all?) IM systems require one or more hubs that track users
and setup the transfer for point to point or transfer all messages
through the hub. Not a practical model for email.
