There were several EDI folks at yesterday's meeting, so I enclose
the following for their benefit. While EDI over the Internet seems
great (I knew it was cheaper, but hearing that *one* transaction
might cost $15,000 was a real surprise), and EDI over email may or
may not work out, EDI over X.400 seems infinitely silly. We should
be able to offer our own EDI challenge.
Please forward to more relevant mailing lists.

Leading Providers Join Testing Of X.400 EC Infrastructure
EMA Effort Spurs Enhancement of 1988 X.400 Products
Arlington, VA -- Nearly a dozen leading software and service
providers, including AT&T, Control Data Systems, GE Information
Services, IBM Global Network, ISOCOR, MaXware, Inc., MCI
Telecommunications Corporation, NEXOR, SITA Group, Sprint, and Supply
Tech, Inc., will participate in the Electronic Messaging Association's
'88 X.400 Challenge Interoperability Testing to support electronic
commerce applications such as the movement of EDI interchanges. The
goal is to demonstrate an '88 X.400-based Electronic Commerce
infrastructure at EMA's Annual Conference, EMA'96, in Anaheim, CA.
Spurred by user demand for North American ADMDs to move toward
1988 X.400 availability and interoperability, the '88 Challenge began
in mid-1995 with the purpose of implementing a viable EDI
message-based electronic commerce solution. EMA members developed a
profile for the project, identifying a set of agreed-upon X.420 and
X.435 elements of service. Interoperability testing of the profile
will take place during February and March, and a live demonstration
will be held at EMA'96, April 27-May 1, 1996.
"EMA's '88 Challenge is bringing software and service
providers together to implement a useable set of functionality to make
end-to-end message-based EDI a reality," said Joanne Ghahremani of the
Electronic Commerce Acquisition Program Management Office (ECA PMO),
the X.400 Challenge Work Group Leader. "This benefits everyone
involved in moving the messaging world rapidly towards enhanced '88
interoperability."
The Electronic Messaging Association (EMA) is an
inter-industry forum dedicated to the promotion, development and use
of electronic messaging technologies for secure global electronic
commerce. Founded in 1983, EMA is now composed of nearly 500 user and
provider member companies representing industries, such as aerospace,
financial services, natural resources, consulting, hardware and
software development, and network service providers. This gathering
of a diverse user and provider membership creates the most
comprehensive resource for information on the messaging industry and
the issues affecting its future. EMA is located at 1655 North Fort
Myer Drive, Suite 850, Arlington, VA 22209 and on the World Wide Web
at http://www.ema.org.
