Folks,
You'll see below why I've explictly copyrighted this message.
In recognition of some problems I saw at the workshop, I'm
trying to think of an acronym that we can use as a working term
for secure Internet (MIME) mail without infringing on existing
terms in use to describe specific products, as well as hopefully
come up with something that could potentially be turned into the
name of a new standard, but not without the approval of the IMC.
Towards that end, perhaps we should copyright whatever we agree
to, and then transfer that copyright to IMC.
In recognition of this copyright issue, everything in this
message is explicitly marked as copyrighted. Assuming any of my
suggestions meet with approval, I'll transfer the copyright to
IMC for future use and protection.
As acronyms, how about SIME (Secure Internet Mail
Enhancements)? SME (Secure MIME Enhancements)? SMS (Secure
Mail (or MIME) Standard)? MIME Enhancements for Security
Standards (MESS)? SM (Secure MIME)? Secure Internet Mail
(SIM)?
Maybe we want to go about it the other way, by taking a word
we like and perhaps inventing what it would/could be an acronym
for? We'd want to be careful not to come too close to existing
product names like Simeon, but I don't think it'd be too hard.
Any and all thoughts on this subject would be appreciated,
since I saw Dave try to say "Secure MIME" on at least two
occasions, and then get tripped up by S/MIME. I think we all
need some term to refer to this concept and perhaps evolving
standard, but one that is not encumbered by any of the known
existing products/standards/drafts.
